Reader Reviews
“I will start by saying that I am going to HAVE to read this book. This was one of the first Lamplighter books we ever purchased but I am just now getting around to the review. My 9 year old son came to me (with wet eyes) hugging this book. He breathlessly exclaimed that he would treasure it forever. He went on to tell me that he wants our entire family to read it and then he wants to hand it down to his children and then to hand it down to their children and so on. I am going to HAVE to read the book that cause such a teary eyed and breathless exclamation. I must say that my heart melted and I was in awe. Thank you Lamplighter Publishing.” — Li Shelley of Princeton, West Virginia
“We are enjoying reading this together. My 7 year old son and 5 year old daughter are following the story well and asking questions.” — Cristina Eklund of Concord, Connecticut

About the Author
Christoph von Schmid (1768-1854) was the pioneer writer of books for children, and his stories have been translated into 24 languages. He is regarded as the greatest educator Bavaria (Germany) produced in the 18th century.
When he began writing stories for the children in his own life in the late 1700s, he did not consider making them available to the general public. In 1841, he published his writings in 24 volumes. When introducing his stories, Schmid explains that he most often read these stories to children after school as a reward, on the condition that they would write the story down at home. In this way, he became familiar with the patterns of thought and speech of children, and learned what impressed their minds and hearts.
Character themes in this story: laziness, perseverance
About the Lamplighter Rare Collector’s SeriesÂ
Lamplighter stories are much more than good and wholesome reading for the family. Â The inspiring role models found in Lamplighter books show a child that outward compliance alone will not carry a child through the stresses and disappointments soon to be faced in adolescence and adulthood. Nor can these ever be a substitute for faith in Christ. Â As we learn of perseverance, courage, loyalty, humility, these are certainly qualities to emulate. But as children read in stories of others like them trying their best and falling short, they will powerfully learn their need for the gospel. Â Though life is often not easy, we can be confident that each disappointment and trial is designed by a loving God for our good.
Lamplighter books are carefully designed to draw children back to the Bible. Editor Mark Hamby wanted to ensure that each story reflects the character of God.  Often, key Scriptures are referenced so that they may be stored in a child’s heart. Lamplighter volumes are recognizable right away by their beautiful, high-quality bindings.  But the other unique feature of a Lamplighter book, in contrast to other publications of the same title, is that Lamplighter editions have been enhanced with helpful footnotes and woven with threads of Biblical truths that will be etched into an awakened moral conscience. These characteristics are what make our Lamplighter Collection so unique and highly valued.
