Daring Deeds (Archer Wallace)
Compelling, true accounts of the dangerous expeditions of courageous men who dared to risk their lives for the sake of murderers, thieves, and even cannibals. Their unrelenting passion moved them onward as they shared the message of hope with ruthless peoples who had never been reached and desperately needed to hear about God’s love and redemption. Indeed, these men are true heroes to emulate.
In 1904, Archer Wallace, a young Methodist minister arrived in the city of Boswarlos in Newfoundland . The people of the area enjoyed his ability to relate to youth and inspire them. Ryerson Press said of him , “Archer Wallace is a boys’ man–the boy in him will never die. Boys gather round him at a football match or hockey game or Sunday School. The Cambridge Seven (John Pollock)
The True Story of Ordinary Men Used in no Ordinary Way
Harold Schofield, a brilliant Oxford doctor who had laboured as a missionary in China for many years, was on his knees praying, ‘Lord, give me missionaries from British Universities to help in China’.
The day Schofield died, D. E. Hoste applied to Hudson Taylor for mission work in the China Inland Mission (Now Overseas Missionary Fellowship). Schofield’s prayer was answered as seven Cambridge students volunteered to leave behind cozy lives of wealth and privilege to serve God in whatever way they were led.
These seven inspired thousands of others to think seriously of missionary service. Included among them was C.T. Studd, captain of England and the finest cricketer of his day. If he could give all that up, then so could anyone!

Mary Slessor: Servant to the Slave (Catherine Mackenzie)
Mary Slessor grew up in the slums of Dundee in the 1800’s. Industry was booming but housing was sub- standard and life expectancy was low. Illness, disease and malnutrition killed many children before they reached the age of five. And Mary’s own family was both poor and abusive! What hope did she have of being “used by God”?
But in the plan of God, the slums of Dundee were Mary’s training ground for a much fiercer battle. Only about 25 years old, Mary traveled to West Africa to devote her life reaching the lost tribes of Calibar. And what a culture it was! Among the peoples of Calibar, superstition demanded that families kill twin babies and murder slaves and women at funerals.
But the Lord Jesus Christ used Mary’s labors to set many free from all that – and from their own sins! Her life in the slums of Dundee was the key ingredient to her success as a missionary – that, and her constant trust in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. To this day, Calibar remembers Mary Slessor, affectionately known as “Ma”; her influence on that region of Africa was astounding.
