Compelling, true accounts of the dangerous expeditions of courageous men who dared to risk their lives for the sake of murderers, thieves, and even cannibals. Their unrelenting passion moved them onward as they shared the message of hope with ruthless peoples who had never been reached and desperately needed to hear about God’s love and redemption. Indeed, these men are true heroes to emulate.

In 1904, Archer Wallace, a young Methodist minister arrived in the city of Boswarlos in Newfoundland . The people of the area enjoyed his ability to relate to youth and inspire them. Ryerson Press said of him , “Archer Wallace is a boys’ man–the boy in him will never die. Boys gather round him at a football match or hockey game or Sunday School. Many boys write to him… with rare insight he is able to understand them… (His books) have proved an inspiration to boys the world over.”

Many boys write to him… with rare insight he is able to understand them… (His books) have proved an inspiration to boys the world over.”

In the 1930s, Wallace returned to Boswarlos and built a cabin in which he continued to write his books for boys. His books recorded true stories of boys who conquered their handicaps and worked their way to fame, achievement, and triumph. Another publisher noted that Wallace “never preaches but tells the story he has to tell in such a way that boys, big and little, understand and realize the message it has for them.”

Character themes in this story: courage, faith and fervent gospel hope.  Originally written in 1934.

Reader Review

“I read this to out loud to my two boys. We enjoyed reading little snippets about the lives of many missionaries who gave up all comforts to share the gospel with unknown people groups.” — Tena Bengston of Omaha, Nebraska

About the Author

Archer Wallace was a youthful Methodist minister early in the 20th century.  He always aimed to inspire the young men he knew to their highest aspirations.  He wrote about a boy’s world with understanding and compassion.  Whether playing football or teaching Sunday school, Wallace involved himself in the community.  Late in life, Wallace constructed and settled into a remote cabin to write books about heroism.  His true stories aimed to give youth a glimpse into the lives of those who overcame obstacles and handicaps, working past such obstacles to triumph.
