About the Author

Richard Newton (1813-1887) was born in Liverpool, England.  He came to the United States to study and was called to be pastor of St. Paul’s Church, Philadelphia in 1840, a position he served in for 22 years.  After this he was called as pastor of Church of the Epiphany, also in Philadelphia, where he remained for the rest of his life.  He was distinguished for his enormous contributions to the field of Christian literature for children. He wrote Pebbles from the Brook; Leaves from the Tree of Life; Heroes of the Early Church; The Safe Compass and How It Points; The King’s Highway, and several more books for youth.
