Perseverance, firmness, and integrity were necessary qualities for the two young commanders entrusted with the monumental task of finding a navigable passage to the Pacific coast. Passing through hostile Indian tribes and battling fierce grizzly bears and countless other dangers, the two leaders with their loyal men struggled to attain their goal of reaching the mighty western Ocean.

The punctuation has been updated to modern usage and the journals slightly abridged, in order to ease the flow of reading. Verb tenses have been updated to reflect modern usage.
