Sanctification

“Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man shall see the Lord”, Hebrews 12:14.  We are to pursue both, and not one at the expense of the other.  But is this a work of God in our lives, or a work of our own?  To answer that directly, why does it have to be either or?  Should not every reasonable will in the universe be laboring towards the Christ-like transformation of a sinner?  Especially when that sinner is himself.  What could be more honorable than to work alongside and in co-operation with the work of God?  The pursuit of holiness is not only every believer’s responsibility; it is his inevitable practical destiny.  If sanctification does not interest a man, that man is no Christian.

  • Devoted to God: Blueprints for Sanctification (Sinclair Ferguson)

Christians are transformed by the renewing of their minds. They understand that in large measure how they think about the gospel will determine how they will live for God’s glory. They learn to allow the word of God to do its own work, informing and influencing the way they think in order to shape the way they live.

In a series of Scripture-enriched chapters Sinclair B. Ferguson’s Devoted to God works out this principle in detail. It provides what he describes as ‘blueprints for sanctification’—an orderly exposition of central New Testament passages on holiness. Devoted to God thus builds a strong and reliable structural framework for practical Christian living. It stresses the foundational importance of fundamental issues such as union with Christ, the rhythms of spiritual growth, the reality of spiritual conflict, and the role of God’s law. Here is a fresh approach to an always relevant subject, and a working manual to which the Christian can turn again and again for biblical instruction and spiritual direction.

  • Hudson Taylor’s Spiritual Secret (Dr. Howard Taylor and Mrs. Howard Taylor)

A spiritual biography of the “father of modern missions,” Hudson Taylor’s Spiritual Secret poses one question: What empowered Hudson Taylor’s ministry in China?

The answer is unfolded in these pages. Written by Taylor’s son and daughter-in-law, it shows us a man with fierce faith who believed that God truly would fuflill all He promises in Scripture.

For Christians longing for the inward joy and power that Hudson Taylor had, they can find the secret to it here. The secret, it turns out, is available to any who call on Christ’s name.

“An easy, non-self-denying life will never be one of power,” Taylor said. “Fruit-bearing involves cross-bearing. There are not two Christs—an easygoing one for easygoing Christians, and a suffering, toiling one for exceptional believers. There is only one Christ. Are you willing to abide in Him, and thus to bear much fruit?”
