Counseling

Sometimes, Christians will ask, “Why does anyone need to go to counseling?  Just do what the Bible says.”  But this naively fails to recognize that counseling is simply another form of teaching.  Just as we all need the Word proclaimed to us by those called by God to preach the Word in our churches, most of us, at some time or another, find ourselves in need of a friend or someone skilled in the Word to come alongside us one-on-one and either teach, or exemplify a biblical lifestyle for us.  Or both. As the Apostle Paul wrote, we’re to “admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.”   For inasmuch as we bear one another’s burdens, thus we fulfill the Law of Christ.

  • Angry with God: An Honest Journey through Suffering and Betrayal (Brad Hambrick)

Counselor Brad Hambrick provides a guided process to being honest with God about your pain to restore and deepen your relationship with him.

No one gets mad at God for something small. When we’re angry with God, it is because we’ve faced something immensely hard. Anger is an often-overlooked part of grieving, and as such, is an appropriate response to profoundly painful events. While we are often prone to interpret our anger about intense suffering as being at God, this book is an invitation to process these intense emotions with God as a source of comfort, who is sturdy enough to support these turbulent emotions.

Angry with God patiently walks you through the process of being honest with God (and others) about your pain. You will learn how to articulate your pain, alleviate the effects of this pain, contextualize your experience in light of the gospel, and begin to hope again.

  • Bad Memories: Getting Past Your Past (Robert D. Jones)

Do memories of your past haunt you? Is there help for people who suffer because of their own past?

Most people who suffer from bad memories want them to disappear. Some want to deny the problem and “just forget the past.” Robert D. Jones shows that God provides a solution to the haunting problem of nagging bad memories.

What is God’s answer? If you belong to Jesus, God has something better for you, Jones writes. God does not want to remove your memories; he wants to transform them into something good. God is bigger than your past. Your memories of past sins–even the worst ones–can be opportunities for life-changing growth. You do not need to avoid, run from, or get rid of your past. Jones points out that painful thoughts may still intrude, but you need not escape them.

Pornography is everywhere. Far too many Christians regularly use and are addicted to it, warping their perception of sexuality and relationships, destroying marriages and ministries. But Christians who struggle with porn also long for change. When we realize the unfulfilling emptiness of porn, we come to yearn for freedom from it. But what do we do?

Tim Chester says that we can be captured by a better vision–a liberating confidence that God offers more than pornography does. He exposes the false promises of porn and redirects us to the true promises of God.

With assurance of God’s grace and cleansing power, we can change our desires and escape the traps and temptations of pornography. However great the challenge, God’s grace is even greater. And we can come to a place where we no longer feel the need to use porn.

Close the window on porn. And open the door to freedom, integrity and new life.

  • Contentment: Joy That Lasts (Robert D. Jones)

Are you in financial trouble or a dead-end job? Single and wishing you were married? Married and wishing it was better? Longing for more security? When life gets tough, contentment is hard to find.

Contentment isn’t found, however—it’s learned, argues biblical counselor Robert Jones. In this pocket-sized exposition and application of Philippians 4:11—13, Jones draws parallels between the reader’s life and the various forms of hardship that the apostle Paul faced. Amid these, we too can experience what Paul experienced: inner satisfaction, peace, and confidence in God’s ability to care and provide.

Quick fixes fail, but Jones shows how, through the gospel, we can learn God-centered contentment each day.
