Christian Growth

“Grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ”, 2 Peter 3:18 exhorts us.  Every believer in Christ understands to some extent the connection between these two: growing in grace, growing in knowing Christ.  They are like hand in glove.  He is the Vine, we are the branches, and He was abundantly clear in saying that we cannot bear fruit except by a close attachment to Him.  By the Spirit we are in Christ, but this does not negate our responsibility to pursue a closer walk with and knowledge of Christ, but rather supports it by making that possible.  The books in this section are written by many wise, sound, and trusted guides in the faith, who can help us make real progress and go from strength to strength in our life with Him.

  • Between Two Worlds (John Stott)

“Preaching is indispensable to Christianity.” World-renowned preacher John Stott opens this book with those five bold words. He maintains, further, that “nothing is better calculated to restore health and vitality to the church than a recovery of true, biblical, contemporary preaching.” Stott was aiming to foster such a recovery when he wrote Between Two Worlds, which has become a modern evangelical classic.

The genius of this book is the way it synthesizes and distills Stott’s wealth of wisdom on preaching, focusing not so much on technical matters but more on theological foundations and on necessary personal characteristics of the preacher—sincerity, earnestness, courage, and humility. Preachers old and new will continue to find much to chew on in these pages.

  • Evangelical Pharisees: The Gospel as Cure for the Church’s Hypocrisy (Michael Reeves)

Scripture warns believers of hypocrisy—called the “leaven of the Pharisees”—and its potential to spread quickly in the church. Outwardly appearing as devout religion, this legalism hides destructive pride, idolatry, and even apostasy. Unfortunately, pharisaism is still a problem among evangelicals today. How does Jesus instruct the church to recognize and defeat one of its deepest theological issues?

In this clear, compelling call to spiritual reformation, Michael Reeves helps believers reject pharisaism and embrace gospel integrity. Studying 3 essentials of Christian doctrine that the Pharisees misunderstood—their approach to Scripture, understanding of salvation, and disregard of regeneration—Reeves shows readers how to embrace a biblical, Trinitarian, and creedal understanding of the gospel necessary for true reformation.

  • It Will Cost You Everything (Steven J. Lawson)

Nestled in a few verses in Luke’s Gospel is a Jesus who would not have been tolerated today: He was not politically correct and He certainly did not try to save people’s feelings. • Knowing Sin (Mark Jones)

We don’t talk a lot about sin these days. But maybe we should. The Puritans sure did—because they understood sin’s deceptive power and wanted to root it out of their lives. Shouldn’t we want the same?

Though many books have been written on the “doctrine of sin,” few are as practical and applicable as this one. In Knowing Sin, Mark Jones puts his expertise in the Puritans to work by distilling the vast wisdom of our Christian forebears into a single volume that summarizes their thought on this vital subject. The result isn’t a theological tome to sit on your shelf and gather dust, but a surprisingly relevant book to keep by your bedside and refer to again and again. You’ll come to understand topics like:

    • Sin’s Origin
    • Sin’s Grief
    • Sin’s Thoughts
    • Sin’s Temptations
    • Sin’s Misery
    • Sin’s Secrecy
    • and of course . . . Sin’s Defeat!

None of us is free from the struggle with sin. The question isn’t whether we’re sinful, it’s what we’re doing about it. Thanks be to God, there is a path to overcoming sin, in Christ.

  • Living in the Daze of Deception (Jack Hibbs)

We live in a time when falsehoods assault us from every direction. Packaged with just enough truth to make them appear trustworthy, these counterfeits have grown more and more difficult to detect and avoid.

  • Men of Science, Men of God (The Henry Morris Signature Collection) (Dr. Henry Morris)

Science and faith are often considered incompatible in the academic world today. One is seen as representing truth, while the other is viewed as fanciful according to the skeptical, science-centered culture. But the reality is that thousands of scientists, in fact, many of science’s greatest “founding fathers,” believed openly in God as they worked and studied His created world. Learn how their discoveries led them to even greater depths of faith and how their beliefs influenced and inspired their work.

There is nothing in science that can ever prove that God does not exist and, therefore, no way that science can disprove Creation. For so many in the past, the answer was that their faith was inseparable from their science, a powerful point to encourage believers and challenge the skeptics.
