The Puritan Paperback Series

This is the complete set of the Puritan Paperbacks Series.  The blessing that this series has been is difficult to estimate. When young Christians ask me, which are the books that have most shaped my thinking, my life, and my walk with God, many of the first books to come to mind are these included in the Puritan Paperbacks series.  It’s a set that makes a great gift for the willing readers, with some of the greatest writings not only of the Puritans, but that have ever been written for Christians across the centuries.  The Puritans were never ones to merely “talk theology”, but their goal was always the application of the Word to the soul.  Practical Christianity is at the heart of what they are all about.  Yet, rooted in sound doctrine about God and about ourselves – for as John Calvin said, the most important categories of knowledge an individual can attain to is an accurate knowledge of God and an equally accurate understanding of himself.

  • Glorious Freedom (Richard Sibbes)

The original title of this study was The Excellency of the Gospel Above the Law, and was written to be a comparison of the greater and full revelation of God in the New Covenant.

Always a doctor to the heart and soul, Puritan Richard Sibbes joyfully shows us how the Spirit of God produces likeness to Christ and consequent great liberty in those who are members of it. One of few Puritan treatises with much to say about the doctrine of adoption.

  • Gospel Life (John Owen) (#61)

There are some questions common to all seekers after Christ. How can I know I truly have faith? What does it look like to be conformed to Jesus? How does God see me?

In Gospel Life, a posthumous compilation of thirteen sermons from the zenith of his preaching career, John Owen answers these questions with great compassion for the Christian who longs for growth and assurance. He draws on a wide range of Scripture to display the character of the Savior, the acceptance of the Father, and the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit. Finally, Owen addresses the death and eternal hope of the believer, offering encouragement to all who love Christ.

  • Gospel Ministry (John Owen) (#62)

There are two intended audiences for discourses on the Christian ministry: the pastor or elder who cares for the church, and his congregation who are called to willing and prayerful submission. In Gospel Ministry, a collection of nine sermons delivered in his fruitful later years, John Owen addresses both.

Whether expounding the role of the Holy Spirit in shaping the ministry, presenting the purposes of the church, savoring God’s care of his people, or warning against being ashamed of the gospel, Owen’s teaching is invaluable for any minister – or member – of the body of Christ.

  • Letters of Samuel Rutherford: A Selection

If you’ve ever wondered, why would I want to read a man’s letters, you have probably not read any of Rutherford’s yet. These are some of the most remarkable, devotionally rich letters in all literature, in the opinion of numerous students of church history. Charles Spurgeon called Rutherford’s letters “the nearest thing to inspiration which can be found in all the writings of mere men.”

This edition contains 69 of Rutherford’s letters on a wide range of subjects. Rutherford was the well-known author of the lyrics to the hymn The Sands of Time are Sinking, sometimes known by its name as a poem, Emmanuel’s Land.

  • Preparations for Sufferings (John Flavel) (#59)

In this exposition of Paul’s words, ‘For I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus’ (Acts 21:13), John Flavel shows us how vital and excellent a thing it is to prepare ourselves for the onset of sufferings.

  • An Ark for All God’s Noahs (Thomas Brooks) (#58)

We live in difficult days and in trying times. This book, with its quaint yet vivid title, points us to the One in whom Christian men and women have always found the strength to persevere come what may. Taking Lamentations 3:24 as his starting-point – ‘The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him,’ – Thomas Brooks expounds the attributes of God with the aim of comforting those who have felt not only the stresses and strains of daily life but also the shearing pain of loss in its various forms.

God, says Brooks, ‘is a portion that is exactly suited to the condition of the soul in its desires, needs, wants, longings and prayers. All the soul needs is found in God. There is light to enlighten the soul, wisdom to counsel the soul, power to support the soul, goodness to supply the soul, mercy to pardon the soul, beauty to delight the soul, glory to ravish the soul, and fullness to fill the soul.’

  • The Glorious Feast of the Gospel (Richard Sibbes) (#60)

Sibbes excelled as a comforter of the troubled and doubting. But he also possessed a rare gift of illuminating every passage of Scripture he handled by drawing out its significance for his hearers and readers.

These features of this highly practical Puritan’s ministry figure prominently in The Glorious Feast of the Gospel. Sibbes takes for his text Isaiah 26:6-9 in order to display ‘Christ’s gracious invitation and royal entertainment of believers.’ The subject-matter is a perfect blend of rich doctrine and practical application. Here is an ‘admirable feast indeed … Jesus Christ is the master of the feast, and the cheer and provision too.’

  • Searching Our Hearts in Difficult Times (John Owen) (#55)

The short chapters in Searching Our Hearts in Difficult Times contain a number of Owen’s talks and sermons on a wide range of subjects.  These are as relevant to Christians today as they were to believers some three and a half centuries ago, when he wrote.

  • All Things Made New: John Flavel for the Christian Life (#51)

Numerous stories are told from John Flavel’s life of how people ‘happened to meet him’ and came away deeply thankful to God, full of resolve to walk with Christ as a result. The same is true of encounters made with Flavel’s writings, as in All Things Made New.

Flavel spent almost his entire ministry in a busy town serving working people. He believed that the gospel impacts and shapes every thought, every feeling, every ambition, emotion, desire, success, tragedy and joy. Christ makes all things new for the believer, and teaches us to follow him with confidence, until that day when he truly renews all things. To read Flavel is to catch and to be changed by the same vision.

  • Precious Remedies Against Satan’s Devices (Thomas Brooks) (#11)

One of the greatest Puritan books ever written – even the vast table of contents is incredibly edifying, providing an 8-page outline categorizing the various methods by which Satan deceives and entices us.

Brooks treated the seductive influence and terrible power of Satan in a way greatly more full and suggestive than in the literature of the present day.

Brooks lists seven reasons for writing this book. The first reason is enough…Brooks says, “Satan hath a greater influence upon men, and higher advantages over them than they think he hath, and the knowledge of his high advantage is the highway to disappoint him, and to render the soul strong in resisting, and happy in conquering.

  • The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment (Jeremiah Burroughs) (#7)

Without a doubt, the most readable and useful book ever written to promote a contented, thankful, uncomplaining and grateful walk with God. We live in a world of grumblers, discontent with God’s widespread goodness. It is all too easy for Christians to share in this spirit with the world.

This book, in typical Puritan form, “doctors” us by proposing remedies to our “spiritual disease” and helps us grow a spirit of thankfulness in its place.

The author focuses especially on helping to bring calm and contentment to the hearts of those in sad and discouraged times. He also aims to promote peace and harmony among believers with various differences of opinion.

  • The Mystery of Providence (John Flavel) (#4)

Do we believe that everything in the world and in our own lives down to the minutest details is ordered by the providence of God? Believers can benefit immeasurably from taking the time to observe and meditate on the workings of God’s providence, and Flavel instructs us how to improve the effort.

John Flavel’s The Mystery of Providence has gained renown for over 300 years as the all-time classic work on the subject of the providence of God. He starts with Psalm 57:2: “I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all things for me.”, and from there, leads his readers to reflect on this truth: “It is the duty of the saints, especially in times of straits, to reflect upon the performances of Providence for them in all the states and through all the stages of their lives.”

Far from a merely theoretical book, this was authored by a pastor with a huge heart, living in times of political upheaval and with the cities of England disease-ridden, which even dramatically impacted his own family.

  • The Doctrine of Repentance (Thomas Watson) (#18)

Repentance is one of the least used words in the Christian church today. In a world that will not tolerate a mention of sin, and in churches where sin has been defined only in sociological terms, the biblical teaching on repentance has inevitably been ignored. Knowing what repentance is, and actually repenting are essential to true Christianity. Jesus Christ Himself said that if we do not repent, we will perish!

It is vital, therefore, to study what Scripture has to say about this theme. Few men have ever provided a better guide to this area of spiritual experience than Thomas Watson. He was a master of both Scripture and the human heart, and wrote with a simplicity and directness that keeps his work fresh and powerful into the 21st century.

Few better guides have existed in this or any other area of spiritual experience than Thomas Watson. He was a master of both Scripture and the human heart, and wrote with a simplicity and directness that keeps his work fresh and powerful for the twenty-first century.

  • The Mortification of Sin (John Owen) (#34)

One of the most valuable of all volumes in the Puritan Paperbacks series: in this faithful and careful abridgement of Owen’s classic work, this foremost of Puritan pastors shows us how to engage in lifelong warfare against the sinful tendencies that remain in us. Owen shows how the power of the Holy Spirit may be relied upon for success in this battle.

Fighting sin with human strength will produce only self-righteousness, superstition and anxiety of conscience. But with faith in Christ, and with the power of the Spirit, victory is certain. The temptations in times like Owen’s and ours are obvious on every side; the remedy to them is clearly pointed out in this practical and helpful book.

  • All Things For Good (Thomas Watson) (#17)

First published in 1663 by the title A Divine Cordial, Watson simply but profoundly explains how God does in fact make all things – good and bad things – work together for the good of His people. By far the most useful explanation of Romans 8:28 ever written.

Watson said that two of the greatest obstacles he faced as a pastor were:
    1) To make unbelievers sad, so they recognize their need of God’s grace, and:
    2) To make believers joyful, in their experience of God’s grace!

He wrote this book to make an effort to undo the second difficulty: by explaining Paul’s teaching in Romans 8:28. As for his own experience, Watson wrote this the year after he and 2,000 other ministers were expelled from the Church of England, and thus exposed to much hardship and suffering. This is the rich exposition of a faithful man who lived in circumstances when only faith in the Word of God could bring him such a confidence.

  • The Godly Man’s Picture (Thomas Watson) (#20)

The ways in which Watson illustrates the traits of a godly man truly is like an artist painting pictures: the reader will feel as if he is with a master illustrator, as Watson was perhaps the most skilled Puritan writer and preacher of all, at drawing memorable illustrations with his words. His skillfulness at this reminds one of the way in which the Lord Jesus taught with parables.

  • The Reformed Pastor (Richard Baxter) (#14)

Perhaps the best and most famous Puritan work on the pastoral ministry, by a man who was a powerful instrument in the hand of God to transform his city of Kidderminster for the cause of Christ.

The Reformed Pastor is the result of a lecture Baxter was to deliver to a group of pastors. As it turn out, his health prevented him from attending, but he sent his manuscript to be read to the men. The biblical basis for his call of reform is Acts 20:28. “Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.”

Baxter easily divides his work into two parts, taking heed to ourselves and taking heed of the flock. For pastors, Baxter first calls on us to make sure we have the faith that we preach to others! And that we live that faith. For the flock, Baxter calls for a return to biblical church discipline and the careful, personal instruction of people in their homes from the catechism. As stated earlier, Baxter modeled this pattern. He preached two one-hour sermons each week and spent two whole days each week going from home to home catechizing his members. He argues that it is in this personal, home teaching that one can really find out what his parishioners know, if they are truly in the faith, and instruct them more fully in the core doctrines of the faith.
