Puritan Sets

To obtain a full set of the complete works of a Puritan is to truly add a treasure chest to your own library.  These works by men of the caliber of John Bunyan, Jonathan Edwards, Stephen Charnock and others like them will enrich your understanding of the Bible immeasurably.  But they must be read slowly and digested with care, to not miss any of the feast.  These ministers put their utmost into their writings, and were not putting their words on paper merely to get into print or hit the “top seller” list. Rather, it was their explicit aim to teach the saints what the Apostle Paul called the whole counsel of God, and to do it in a way that would nourish the souls of their readers, in fact, even doctor the soul – for they were skilled spiritual physicians.

Treasures of John Owen Box Set (5 volume set)

In recent decades, several of Owen’s works have been edited and published in paperback format to make them more readily accessible for Christians today. Now, in this beautifully produced box set — the Treasures of John Owen — they are being republished in hardback format arranged in five volumes.

Within this box set readers will find themselves entering a world of biblical, doctrinal, pastoral and spiritual instruction that is not only accessible to them, but also leads them into a fresh understanding of the greatness of the gospel — what Paul describes as the four-dimensional love of God for us in Christ (‘breadth and length, height and depth’) — and its many practical implications. Here then is a collection of books designed to enable us to grow in both knowledge and grace.

  • The Works of Jonathan Edwards (Banner of Truth edition)

Widely recognized as a great theologian, an influential preacher and a prolific writer, Jonathan Edwards played a prominent role in helping to spark the spirit of revivalism known as the Great Awakening in the eighteenth-century America. Edwards’ sermons, while intellectually engaging, were also accessible to the common people and often generated highly emotional responses. His foremost desire was to help people transform from mere believers in Christian doctrine to converted Christians who were moved to action by the principles of their belief.

This two-volume collection of Edwards’ works features important sermons of the Great Awakening as well as Edwards’ memoirs and other essays. First published in 1834, this new edition of The Works of Jonathan Edwards is the best available in print today.

  • The Christian in Complete Armour: 3 vol. set (William Gurnall)

The 3-volume paperback set of one of the most important Puritan works ever published! The classic work on the Christian warfare, sanctification, and the fight every Christian is engaged in, against the world, the flesh, and the devil – all the spiritual forces aligned against us. But Gurnall shows how the power of Christ equips us for the warfare.

The book is a vast collection of sermons on Ephesians 6:10-20, on being “strong in the Lord.” Without a doubt, some of the most edifying reading ever penned by any of the Puritans – and that’s saying a lot.

  • The Works of Hugh Binning

Hugh Binning (1627-1653) lived at a time when politics and religion were inexorably intertwined. Binning trained as a Philosopher – believing that philosophy was the servant of theology but that both should be taught in parallel. Binning’s writing forms an important bridge between the 17th century, when philosophy in Scotland was heavily dominated by Calvinism, and the 18th century when there was a greater degree of independence between theology and allied philosophy.

Of Binning’s speaking style, it was said: “There is originality without any affectation, a rich imagination, without anything fanciful or extravert, the utmost simplicity, without a thing mean or trifling.” – The Religious Magazine, 1830

  • The Works of John Newton (4 volumes)

Newton has a firm place in the classics of Christian literature. While his style is strong and clear, it is the spiritual attractiveness and importance of his main themes which secure the permanent value of his writings. Most of his books came, unpremeditated, out of a need to help his congregation or individual hearers, and it is in practical helpfulness towards Christian living that he excels.

  • The Works of Stephen Charnock

In the words of J.I. Packer, “Charnock has no desire to speculate, but only to declare the works and ways, the nature and character, of the God of the Bible.”

Among the theological and spiritual giants of the days of the English Puritans, Stephen Charnock (1628-80) was prominent among them. His Works present a feast of rich teaching and exposition, characterized throughout by sound theology, profound thought, and an imaginative style.
