The Gospel

It has been said that The Gospel contains four key elements: a message about God; a message about man in sin; a message about Christ; and a required response.  In the case of God, the issue is that He is our Creator, is holy, and has every right to require righteousness from men and women created in His image. In the matter of man and sin, that we have fallen short of that requirement.  But concerning Christ, the message of the gospel emphasizes the wondrous truth that God became man to redeem us Himself and restore us to His perfect righteousness. Thus a response of repentance (rejecting our own ways) and faith (trusting Him and His ways) is the fourth element.  The books in this section will help you understand this glorious good news better.

  • Surprised by Jesus (Dane Ortlund)

When God-in-the-flesh showed up twenty centuries ago in Palestine, the religious PhDs rejected him and the prostitutes and social outcasts flocked to him. Why? . . . Because the open welcome of divine grace that Jesus offers, open to anyone who would simply leave their moral resume at home, is not predictable. It is not safe. It is subversive. . .

  • The True Christian’s Love to the Unseen Christ (Thomas Vincent)

First written in the 17th century, Thomas Vincent springs from 1 Peter 1:8, where Peter speaks of Christ, “Whom having not seen, ye love…”.

One of the most heart-touching, poignant books ever to come from a Puritan pen. Out of print since 1812, it’s has been considered a masterpiece of Christian devotion ever since. Thomas Vincent explains, perhaps better than anyone has before or since, that the essence of becoming a Christian is coming to love Christ with all your heart.

The essence of Christianity is love. God is love, said the Apostle John. Obedience to God’s commands is nothing more than a manifestation of our love to God. The Ten Commandments show how we are to love God and one another. Love, then, is of the utmost importance in true biblical Christianity.

  • Don’t Blame the Mud: Only Jesus Makes Us Clean (Marty Machowski)

    Illustrated by Craig MacIntosh.

With gospel truth at the center, Don’t Blame the Mud helps parents create an environment of confession so kids can own up to their own mistakes—in the freedom of Christ—rather than place the blame elsewhere. Parents, teachers, and caretakers can help children identify with the real-life draw of temptation and the real-life consequences of sin, understanding the value of God’s salvation through the cross. Instead of teaching kids how to deal with a problem, Machowski uncovers the real issue of sin and provides a gospel answer.

  • Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers (Dane Ortlund)

Paul David Tripp, President, Paul Tripp Ministries; author, New Morning Mercies and My Heart Cries Out

Christians know what Jesus Christ has done—but who is he? What is his deepest heart for his people, weary and faltering on their journey toward heaven? Jesus said he is “gentle and lowly in heart.” This book reflects on these words, opening up a neglected yet central truth about who he is for sinners and sufferers today.

  • Charges and Addresses (J. C. Ryle)

A man of good scholarship, sterling character, wide sympathies, and tremendous zeal, J. C. Ryle accounted it no light thing to be entrusted with the work of organizing and advancing the cause of God and truth in a diocese noted for its extensive industrial development and in a city of world fame. As a man of God he gave unfeigned allegiance to the plenary inspiration of Holy Scripture.

Linked with this was his determination to strive for the maintenance of the Protestant character of the Church of England as by law established in the days of the sixteenth-century Reformation. Doctrine, experience, and practice based upon and shaped by the pure word of God were to him the essentials of the ongoing life of the Church.

  • The Glorious Feast of the Gospel (Richard Sibbes) (#60)

Sibbes excelled as a comforter of the troubled and doubting. But he also possessed a rare gift of illuminating every passage of Scripture he handled by drawing out its significance for his hearers and readers.

These features of this highly practical Puritan’s ministry figure prominently in The Glorious Feast of the Gospel. Sibbes takes for his text Isaiah 26:6-9 in order to display ‘Christ’s gracious invitation and royal entertainment of believers.’ The subject-matter is a perfect blend of rich doctrine and practical application. Here is an ‘admirable feast indeed … Jesus Christ is the master of the feast, and the cheer and provision too.’

  • Post-Christian: A Guide to Contemporary Thought and Culture (Gene Edward Veith Jr.)

Undaunted Hope in a Post-Christian World

We live in a post-Christian world. Contemporary thought—claiming to be “progressive” and “liberating”—attempts to place human beings in God’s role as creator, lawgiver, and savior. But these post-Christian ways of thinking and living are running into dead ends and fatal contradictions.

This timely book demonstrates how the Christian worldview stands firm in a world dedicated to constructing its own knowledge, morality, and truth. Gene Edward Veith Jr. points out the problems with how today’s culture views humanity, God, and even reality itself. He offers hope-filled, practical ways believers can live out their faith in a secularist society as a way to recover reality, rebuild culture, and revive faith.

  • The Almost Christian Discovered (Matthew Mead)

Back in print in a new edition! The Almost Christian Discovered, a classic Puritan work, was written in 1661 and is one of the most important books ever written. The primary point which Mead presents is this:
“There are very many in the world that are almost, and yet but almost Christians; many that are near heaven, and yet are never the nearer; many that are within a little of salvation, and yet shall never enjoy the least salvation; they are within sight of heaven, and yet shall never have a sight of God.”

Mead helps his readers to consider twenty (20) signs which most persons would say are the traits of true Christians; then he effectively shows, using biblical examples, how each of them may be equally true of non-Christians.

  • The Doctrine of Repentance (Thomas Watson) (#18)

Repentance is one of the least used words in the Christian church today. In a world that will not tolerate a mention of sin, and in churches where sin has been defined only in sociological terms, the biblical teaching on repentance has inevitably been ignored. Knowing what repentance is, and actually repenting are essential to true Christianity. Jesus Christ Himself said that if we do not repent, we will perish!

It is vital, therefore, to study what Scripture has to say about this theme. Few men have ever provided a better guide to this area of spiritual experience than Thomas Watson. He was a master of both Scripture and the human heart, and wrote with a simplicity and directness that keeps his work fresh and powerful into the 21st century.

Few better guides have existed in this or any other area of spiritual experience than Thomas Watson. He was a master of both Scripture and the human heart, and wrote with a simplicity and directness that keeps his work fresh and powerful for the twenty-first century.
