  • Appearances of the Son of God in the Old Testament (John Owen)

In 1668, the famous Puritan John Owen began publishing his magnum opus. Twenty-two years in the making, this first volume contained twenty-four “exercitations,” preliminary practices to help the reader understand what is coming in his magisterial study of the book of Hebrews. The tenth of these was titled, “Appearances of the Son of God Under the Old Testament.” It contains a precious discussion on Christ, especially as he appears as the Angel of the LORD, an actual person and character who appears time and again from Genesis to Malachi. This long-neglected treatise is a necessary back-bone holding up the perhaps longer-neglected and often misunderstood larger body of evidence demonstrating that the Second Person of the Trinity is literally present and known to the saints of the era prior to the incarnation. Anyone finding themselves desiring to learn more about this topic from one of the most respected of all the Puritans would do well to master the contents of this little book. We have also added dozens of quotations from Church Fathers and Reformers down to the present day showing the orthodoxy of the often denied doctrine that Christ was not merely typed and prophesied in the Old Testament, he was actually present in his person.

  • Gospel Life (John Owen) (#61)

There are some questions common to all seekers after Christ. How can I know I truly have faith? What does it look like to be conformed to Jesus? How does God see me?

In Gospel Life, a posthumous compilation of thirteen sermons from the zenith of his preaching career, John Owen answers these questions with great compassion for the Christian who longs for growth and assurance. He draws on a wide range of Scripture to display the character of the Savior, the acceptance of the Father, and the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit. Finally, Owen addresses the death and eternal hope of the believer, offering encouragement to all who love Christ.

  • Gospel Ministry (John Owen) (#62)

There are two intended audiences for discourses on the Christian ministry: the pastor or elder who cares for the church, and his congregation who are called to willing and prayerful submission. In Gospel Ministry, a collection of nine sermons delivered in his fruitful later years, John Owen addresses both.

Whether expounding the role of the Holy Spirit in shaping the ministry, presenting the purposes of the church, savoring God’s care of his people, or warning against being ashamed of the gospel, Owen’s teaching is invaluable for any minister – or member – of the body of Christ.

The writing and teaching of John Owen, a 17th century pastor and theologian, continues to serve the church. Daily communion with God characterized his life and equipped him for both ministry and persecution.

  • The Works of John Owen (16 volumes)

Despite his other achievements, Owen is best famed for his writings. These cover the range of doctrinal, ecclesiastical and practical subjects. They are characterized by profundity, thoroughness and, consequently, authority. Andrew Thomson said that Owen ‘makes you feel when he has reached the end of his subject, that he has also exhausted it.’ Although many of his works were called forth by the particular needs of his own day they all have a uniform quality of timelessness. Owen’s works were republished in full in the nineteenth century. Owen is surely the Prince of the Puritans. ‘To master his works’, says Spurgeon, ‘is to be a profound theologian.’

Dr. D. M. Lloyd-Jones wrote: ‘It is almost presumption to recommend any work by Dr. John Owen. All his works are of the greatest value and profit…’

  • The Mortification of Sin (John Owen) (#34)

One of the most valuable of all volumes in the Puritan Paperbacks series: in this faithful and careful abridgement of Owen’s classic work, this foremost of Puritan pastors shows us how to engage in lifelong warfare against the sinful tendencies that remain in us. Owen shows how the power of the Holy Spirit may be relied upon for success in this battle.

Fighting sin with human strength will produce only self-righteousness, superstition and anxiety of conscience. But with faith in Christ, and with the power of the Spirit, victory is certain. The temptations in times like Owen’s and ours are obvious on every side; the remedy to them is clearly pointed out in this practical and helpful book.

  • Temptation and Sin (Volume 6 of The Works of John Owen)

This is very the most important treatise ever written on the subject of Temptation and Sin. Certainly the primary source work for multitudes of writings on the subject since then. Includes Owen’s incomparable On the Mortification of Sin in Believers, followed by Of Temptation: The Nature and Power of it, with further material on the deceitfulness of sin, its prevalence in believers, and a practical exposition of Psalm 130.

  • The Death of Death in the Death of Christ (John Owen)

This masterpiece of Puritan John Owen is a polemical work, designed to show that the doctrine of universal redemption is unscriptural and destructive of the gospel. Those who see no need for doctrinal exactness and have no time for theological debates which show up divisions between Evangelicals may well regret its reappearance. Some may find the very sound of Owen’s thesis so shocking that they will refuse to read his book at all.

It is to those who share this readiness that Owen’s treatise is offered, in the belief that it will help us in one of the most urgent tasks facing Evangelical Christendom today – the recovery of the gospel.

  • Temptation: Resisted and Repulsed (John Owen) (#40)

In this abridgement of John Owen’s classic work Of Temptation, the famous Puritan theologian opens up Matthew 26:41, carefully explaining what temptation is and what it means to enter into it. Owen then shows how Christ teaches two means for Christians to use in order to guard against this danger, namely watching and praying:

“These two”, Owen says, “comprise the whole endeavour of faith for the souls preservation from temptation”, and he insists that it is the duty of every believer to follow diligently Christ’s instructions to avoid falling into temptation. Owen helpfully applies his teaching, explaining how we can know whether we have entered into temptation, what practical steps we should take to preserve our souls from entering into it, how to identify those particular times when people tend to enter into temptation, and showing us the best ways of watching the heart itself.

  • The Glory of Christ (John Owen)

To see the glory of Christ is one of the greatest privileges that a Christian can enjoy. Anyone who does not see his glory in this world, will not see his glory in heaven, and no one should look for anything in heaven that he has not experienced in this life. Just as looking directly into the sun darkens our vision, so Christ’s heavenly splendor is too brilliant for our mind’s eye, but in seeing it by faith, we are prepared for heaven. In his immense essence, the infinite God is invisible to our finite human eyes, and will remain so for eternity. Only “in the face of Jesus Christ” can we see God and be filled with peace and rest.
