A Golden Chain (William Perkins)
Written by William Perkins (1558-1602), A Golden Chain is one of the best treatments of the doctrines of election and reprobation ever written. Due to its controversial nature, it is one of the few significant and influential works written by a Puritan which has not been widely republished as a standalone version. In this version of A Golden Chain, transcribed from the 1597 edition of Perkins’ work, it has been lightly abridged and modernized with simplified language and new structural diagrams. Also included is a brief introduction to both Perkins’ life and work written by Perkins scholar, Matthew Payne.

The Failure of Natural Theology: A Critical Appraisal of the Philosophical Theology of Thomas Aquinas (Jeffrey D. Johnson)
Aristotle’s cosmological argument is the foundation of Aquinas’s doctrine of God. For Thomas, the cosmological argument not only speaks of God’s existence but also of God’s nature. By learning that the unmoved mover is behind all moving objects, we learn something true about the essence of God—principally, that God is immobile. But therein lies the problem for Thomas. The Catholic Church had already condemned Aristotle’s unmoved mover because, according to Aristotle, the unmoved mover is unable to be the moving cause (i.e., Creator) and governor of the universe—or else he would cease to be immobile. By seeking to baptize Aristotle into the Catholic Church, however, Thomas gave his life to seeking to explain how God can be both immobile and the moving cause of the universe. Thomas even looked to the pantheistic philosophy of Pseudo-Dionysius for help. But even with Dionysius’s aid, Thomas failed to reconcile the god of Aristotle with the Trinitarian God of the Bible. If Thomas would have rejected the natural theology of Aristotle by placing the doctrine of the Trinity, which is known only by divine revelation, at the foundation of his knowledge of God, he would have rid himself of the irresolvable tension that permeates his philosophical theology. Thomas could have realized that the Trinity alone allows for God to be the only self-moving being—because the Trinity is the only being not moved by anything outside himself but freely capable of creating and controlling contingent things in motion.

The Sovereignty of God (Arthur W. Pink)
Just a little over a century after its original publication, Arthur W. Pink’s The Sovereignty of God continues to be one of the most helpful works on the matters of God’s sovereignty and providence. Wherein, in clear and accessible language, Pink guides the Christian through how God is sovereign over all the events that take place, and how he is working out all things for His glory and for those who love him. This edition, being entirely unabridged, is further supplemented by two additional essays written by Paul Helm and Brett Lee-Price which talk about the book’s historical significance and theology.

The Sovereignty of God (A. W. Pink)
Frequently called one of the five most life-changing books of this century, and certainly among those we know, we have heard this testimony.
“Present day conditions call loudly for a new examination and new presentation of God’s omnipotence, God’s sufficiency, God’s sovereignty. From every pulpit in the land it needs to be thundered that God still lives, that God still observes, that God still reigns. Faith is now in the crucible, it is being tested by fire, and there is no fixed and sufficient resting-place for the heart and mind but in The Throne of God. What is needed now, as never before, is a full, positive, constraining setting forth of the Godhood of God.”

Old Paths (J. C. Ryle)
Subtitled, “Being Plain Statements on some of the Weightier Matters of Christianity.” Some of Ryle’s most persuasive expositions on the great themes of the gospel.
It was the prophet Jeremiah who first used the expression ‘old paths’ and assured those who followed those paths would find ‘rest for (their) souls’ (Jeremiah 6:16). J.C. Ryle was of the same conviction and wrote:
“The longer I live the more I am convinced that the world needs no new Gospel, as some profess to think. I am thoroughly persuaded that the world needs nothing but bold, full, unflinching teaching of the ‘old paths’”.
