Island Aflame (Tom Lennie)
Revival history expert sorts fact from myth in the story of one of the best known revivals
Scotland has played host to a vast array of religious revivals over the course of its history, but by far the best known of these is the Lewis Revival of 1949–52 (also known as the Hebrides revival). The stories around it are extraordinary, with the Spirit working in the lives of many people across this Scottish island.
There have been, however, rumours and myths that have grown up around the stories of the Lewis Revival, that did not actually occur. Revival history expert, Tom Lennie, examines the eye witness accounts and sorts the amazing true story from the exaggerations that have become entangled.
The story of the revival that truly occurred is based on overwhelming evidence. Its essence was powerful preaching, based on God’s word. It was a remarkable, life changing event for hundreds of individuals, and that still has an impact today.

John Knox: The Sharpened Sword (Catherine Mackenzie)
John Knox spent his life with a sword in one hand and a Bible in the other and he wasn’t afraid to use either. He began his theological life as a bodyguard to George Wishart – and when that young servant of the Lord was put to death by the religious authorities, the event was what persuaded Knox of the need to preach himself, to awaken his country from the death of injustice and spiritual poverty that afflicted it.
Knox was never made for a quiet life, so when he ran from one danger, he often found himself headed straight for another. Escaping from the powers that be brought him straight into a castle siege and from there he ended up as a galley slave on a French frigate. No wonder Knox valued liberty! – as one who had felt the grasp of slavery’s chains and the cut of the enemy’s whip.
But his thirst for true freedom came from his longing for God’s Word to be preached. John knew that true liberty only came from being in service to God and his Kingdom. Many stood against him and they still do today… but he gave much to his country and to his God and the church and Scotland owe John Knox – they owe him thanks as they owe the God he served thanks for calling such men to be his preachers.

The Works of Hugh Binning
Hugh Binning (1627-1653) lived at a time when politics and religion were inexorably intertwined. Binning trained as a Philosopher – believing that philosophy was the servant of theology but that both should be taught in parallel. Binning’s writing forms an important bridge between the 17th century, when philosophy in Scotland was heavily dominated by Calvinism, and the 18th century when there was a greater degree of independence between theology and allied philosophy.
Of Binning’s speaking style, it was said: “There is originality without any affectation, a rich imagination, without anything fanciful or extravert, the utmost simplicity, without a thing mean or trifling.” – The Religious Magazine, 1830

The Mighty Weakness of John Knox (Douglas Bond) Hardcover
John Knox, the great Reformer of Scotland, is often remembered as something akin to a biblical prophet born out of time—strong and brash, thundering in righteous might. In truth, he was “low in stature, and of a weakly constitution,” a small man who was often sickly and afflicted with doubts and fears.
In The Mighty Weakness of John Knox, author Douglas Bond shows that Knox did indeed accomplish herculean tasks, but not because he was strong and resolute in himself. Rather, he was greatly used because he was submissive to God; therefore, God strengthened him. That strength was displayed as Knox endured persecution and exile, faced down the wrath of mighty monarchs, and prayed, preached, and wrote with no fear of man, but only a desire to manifest the glory of God and to please Him.
For those who see themselves as too weak, too small, too timid, or simply too ordinary for service in God’s kingdom, Knox’s life offers a powerful message of hope—the biblical truth that God often delights to work most powerfully through people who are most weak in themselves but most strong in Him.

Nine Day Queen of England: Lady Jane Grey (Faith Cook)
“Kneeling down on the hard wooden scaffold Jane turned to Feckenham who stood by her. “Shall I say this Psalm?”, she faltered. Overcome with emotion…he simply said, “Yea.”
Jane then began to repeat Psalm 51 in English, David’s great prayer of contrition. Jane recited all nineteen verses “in a most devout manner”, and then both she and Feckenham rose to their feet. A deep silence rested over that sad scene. Nothing could be heard except for the quiet sobbing of her lady attendants.
Hardened soldiers, who had witnessed brutality many times before, stood without moving, as Lady Jane called out in a clear voice: “Lord into thy hands I commend my spirit.” Then with a stroke — swift, sharp and terrible — Jane’s short life was ended.
Like the Apostle Paul, she had fought a good fight, finished the course and kept the faith. Henceforth there was laid up for her a crown of righteousness–a crown that none could take from her.”
