A Journey in Revival
True or False?
A Journey in Revival continues the story of Ira Pointer, this time instructing a study group at seminary about a new revival which has begun on campus. Is it for real? Or is it fanaticism? Controversy swirls around the events as a careful theological analysis is done concerning the movement and its practices.
One of Ira’s students at the seminary challenges him to attend a new kind of revival, full of great excitement and emotion. A study group at the seminary begins to probe the theological basis behind the movement. An old friend reappears in Ira’s life, in the role of the leading evangelist of this fresh emotional explosion.
As controversy stirs on campus, Ira begins to get pressured to resign from the faculty, as some strenuously object to his insistence on a theological analysis of the movement and its practices.
The power and providence of God delivers Ira from this situation, averting both serious vocational and bodily tragedy, as he waits, trusting God to move and glorify His name in a set of almost impossible circumstances. Dink stands with him through the whole journey, and when it is over, a threat for the future still lingers, but God has clearly given them victory in the struggle to stand for truth.

The Great Awakening (Joseph Tracy)
Although a considerable number of scattered records accompanied what Jonathan Edwards called the ‘Revival of Religion in New England in 1740’ it was not until 1841 that Joseph Tracy thoroughly sifted these original sources and became its first historian. He aimed to provide ‘a work which should furnish the means of suitably appreciating both the good and the evil of that period of religious history.’ ‘His design,’ as C. H. Maxson has written, ‘was admirably executed.’
The Great Awakening is a challenging story to tell, because opinions of its nature and value differed widely, both at the time and since then. “The doctrine of the new birth made its way like lightning into the hearers’ consciences”, wrote George Whitefield, but other critics asserted that multitudes of people were genuinely “out of their wits” at the time. The Great Awakening does not fit easily into any of the usual norms.
