Best known as author of Stepping Heavenward, Elizabeth Prentiss had a life which equipped her to minister to others through her letters, books, and poetry. The one great passion of her life was to grow in love for God! Many have testified that her writings inspire them with that same passion. Sharon James, one of the most skillful authors of biography living in this century, has now chosen to share Mrs. Prentiss’ story with us.

Her life shows us that the most difficult circumstances we endure are “God’s school” to teach us more about His grace, and that the worst tragedies are the best ways to learn of His adequacy.

About the Author

Sharon James is an author and conference speaker, who has spoken to many different audiences on biblical womanhood, both in the UK and abroad. She has degrees in history (Cambridge University) and theology (M.Div., Toronto Baptist Seminary), and a doctorate from the University of Wales. She has taught History in the UK and Malawi. Sharon now works for the Christian Institute.

Her books include Ann Judson: A Missionary Life for Burma, God’s Design for Women,  In Trouble and in Joy, Elizabeth Prentiss: ‘More Love to Thee’ (published by the Trust), and Gentle Rain on Tender Grass: Daily Readings from the Pentateuch.

Sharon is married to Bill, who is pastor of Emmanuel Church, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, England, where they have been since 1991.  Bill and Sharon have two grown up children.

Daughter of Erroll and Lyn Hulse

Sharon is the daughter of Erroll and Lyn Hulse and grew up in a manse ‘where God’s glory was regarded as more important than anything else’. She was convicted of her need of salvation around the age of eleven, was baptized and joined the church at the age of fourteen. She and Bill both studied at Cambridge, and were both heavily involved in the university Christian Union and at Eden Baptist Chapel. Two years after their marriage, and the confirmation of Bill’s call to the ministry, they studied together at Toronto Baptist Seminary for three years, before beginning ministry at Emmanuel.
