The Boy’s Collection
This set of 8 stories for boys is some of our richest, most challenging books for boys ages 8 to 14. Every one of them is a reprint from the 19th century. The Children’s Heritage Series Boy’s Collection is also very suitable to read aloud with younger children or for family reading.
Continuing in the tradition of the well-known Grace & Truth Books Children’s Character Building Collection, these volumes tell stories of young men facing challenging dilemmas in life through which they learn to grow in Christian character. They are also highly gospel-centered stories. This means, they don’t merely promote a life of good behavior or hopes of being saved by our good works. Rather, they encourage a boy to turn in faith and repentance to Jesus Christ early in life. Then, to live a life in pursuit of godliness while continually looking to God and His abundant grace for the forgiveness of sin.
They were originally published by the American Tract Society in the 1800s. From 1970 to the 1990s, the faithful ministry of Triangle Press in Montana kept them in print. But now, these stories have been republished in their highest-quality editions ever.
The Children’s Heritage Series Boy’s Collection includes:
- Gerrit and His Dog
- This story on the subject of compassion, has been reprinted in several editions. The tension, excitement, and tenderness with which it is told has made it stir the hearts of many since its first printing around 1900.
- A Faithful Boy’s Influence
- Charlie Clement was a visitor at the home of relatives for a year, and his visit brought about great changes in the minds and attitudes of both the townspeople and even the local pastor. Charlie’s admirable character was an encouragement to everyone he met and many learned to imitate his walk with the Lord. This is a wonderful story for boys about how a young man initiated respect for God’s servant by his good example. It can shape your son’s thought and character on an important point.
- Grace to the Humble
- For the first time, these two classic, famed stories are joined in one joint edition. Hannah More’s Tom White the Postboy tells of a young man’s growth in character, becoming a well-respected farmer in his community and a Christian example to all who knew him.
- The Young Christian
- Follow Freddie through the pages of this Christian children’s story, seeing his transformation from a very self-willed child to a true witness to all his friends for the Savior.

-
A beautiful allegory, to show the contrasts between two farmers and their families. Mr. Worthy is a devoted Christian with a wonderful, godly home. Mr. Bragwell and his family are only “socially religious”, for worldly show and live for selfish gain and pride. Often, Mr. Worthy tries to show Mr. Bragwell the error of his ways, but his counsel is scorned.
Not until God works in ways which seize his attention and sober him, does Mr. Bragwell realize that the truths his friend have told him are the only paths to everlasting happiness.
- The Negro Servant and the Black Prince
-
The first story, The Negro Servant, was written by Legh Richmond early in the 1800s. This pastor’s warmth and tenderness toward his people comes through loud and clear as he touchingly conveys this beautiful conversion story which he witnessed in his own town. In times of great prejudice, this story was a warm demonstration that Christ welcomes all peoples to Himself.
The second story, The Black Prince, shows how life often does not turn out as expected for those who commit their lives to serve the Lord. Even for those in positions of great power, God still rules and has His own plans for each of us.

- Rescue at the Eleventh Hour
- Rescue at the Eleventh Hour begins with the story of him being burned at the stake. But as a result, the Clayton family begin to investigate the Biblical truths being rediscovered during the Protestant Reformation. As a result, they came to believe in salvation through Christ alone. But it’s a dangerous time for believers, the reign of Mary I of England. This is an account of what God put them through for their faith, and how God providentially sustained them.

- Kanousky, the Indian Boy and David Brainerd, the Indian’s Missionary
- The grace of the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ, who seeks and finds His lost sheep is the theme of the first story about Kanousky, a poor Indian boy who survives a battle and ends up lost and alone. In his need, he stumbles upon some farmers who called themselves “Christians.” God’s Word makes a lasting impression on Kanousky’s life, that grows throughout his trials and adventures, and soon, “though he was lost”, he soon regards himself as “found by the Lord.”
Some of these will soon become some of your son’s favorite and most memorable stories.
Be sure to also see our Children’s Heritage Series Girl’s Collection. It’s a parallel set of eight stories for girls with similar themes and goals – to encourage our children to come to Christ early in life and then to walk faithfully with Him, resisting the world and its temptations.
