Spiritual-Mindedness (John Owen) (#41)

$8.00$10.00

Thomas Chalmers wrote that Owen’s book on Spiritual-Mindedness holds ‘a distinguished rank among the voluminous writings of this celebrated author’. For him three features made it special:
* The force with which it applies truth to the conscience
* The way in which Owen plumbs the depths of Christian experience as a skillful physician of the soul
* The uncovering of the secrets of the mind and heart so that the true spiritual state of the reader is discovered

This book began as a collection of meditations on Romans 8:6, written for the author’s own benefit during a time of illness. Alarmed by the subtle power the world has over the mind, Owen shows us how to really live by raising our thoughts above all earthly objects and setting them on ‘things above, where Christ is’ (Col. 3:1).

Spiritual-Mindedness

Originally entitled by Owen The Grace and Duty of Being Spiritually Minded, this update has been titled Spiritual-Mindedness.

Thomas Chalmers wrote that Owen’s book on Spiritual-Mindedness holds ‘a distinguished rank among the voluminous writings of this celebrated author’. For him three features made it special:

  • The force with which it applies truth to the conscience
  • The way in which Owen plumbs the depths of Christian experience as a skillful physician of the soul
  • The uncovering of the secrets of the mind and heart so that the true spiritual state of the reader is discovered

Meditations on Romans 8:6

This book began as a collection of meditations on Romans 8:6, written for the author’s own benefit during a time of illness. Alarmed by the subtle power the world has over the mind, Owen shows us how to really live by raising our thoughts above all earthly objects and setting them on ‘things above, where Christ is’ (Col. 3:1).

This was a favorite book of William Wilberforce! It comes from the pen of a tender-hearted pastor whose only purpose is to encourage the believer in the ongoing battle against sin. So if you feel overwhelmed by the power of worldliness then this is definitely the book for you.

Modern readers will probably find this volume easier to understand than the full work, and this will no doubt be appreciated. A great deal of hard work has gone into the abridgement and can only stimulate interest in Owen’s important theme. Money spent on it will not be wasted, especially as it may even encourage readers to graduate to the original.  For purposes of reference, unless stated otherwise, page numbers and quotations are from the primary source in Volume 7.

About the Author

John Owen’s life from 1616 until 1683 spans one of the most momentous epochs in the history of Britain. How should we assess this man of so many talents?  His served as a country pastor, an army chaplain, head of an Oxford college before leading the persecuted Nonconformists.
