Arthur W. Pink: Predestination
A Survey of Pink’s Theology on this Key Topic
Most Pastors and laymen who have read any of the writing of A.W. Pink know that a central plank of his theological system was the doctrine of predestination. From the early pages of his first book through the final pages of his last book, A.W. Pink never evaded the issues nor minced words as he spoke and wrote on this subject.
In Pink’s times, when the subject was unpopular and hated by even many believers, he spoke his convictions through his pen. And now that the subject is more widely received, he continues to speak through his pen, and perhaps is a large part of the reason for the revival of what is known as the doctrines of grace.
Richard P. Belcher, in this work, tabulates and systematizes Pink’s views on predestination. Beginning with Pink’s general definition of predestination as a foundation, Dr. Belcher then sets forth Pink’s strong views of election and reprobation. This work closes with a comparison of Pink’s views of The Philadelphia Baptist Confession of Faith, followed by an analysis and critique by Dr. Belcher of the Pink view in this important doctrinal area.
About A. W. Pink:
Arthur W. Pink (1886 – 1952) was an English Bible teacher who spent most of his adult life in various pastorates in the United States, and sparked a renewed interest in Calvinism. Virtually unknown in his own lifetime, Pink was author and editor of a magazine, the articles from which eventually made him one of the most influential evangelical authors in the second half of the twentieth century.

Our God (Octavius Winslow)
Octavius Winslow, without question, is one of the most refreshing and spiritually stirring authors to ever live. His writings provoke hunger after God and His Word like few men ever could. His majestic work on Our God is finally back in print.
In Our God, Octavius Winslow examines several of the perfections of God revealed to us in Scripture. Rather than advancing a comprehensive study on the attributes of God, Winslow limits his discussion to some of the moral perfections of God, such as His love, patience, comfort, and grace.

The Doctrine of Justification (James Buchanan)
“This is the classic work on this cardinal doctrine by which a church stands or falls. After lucidly covering the historical development of the doctrine through the Old Testament, the apostolic age, the scholastic divines, the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, and in the Church of England, Buchanan expounds the doctrine itself by covering the scriptural meaning of the term, its relation to the law and justice of God, its relation to the mediatorial work of Christ, its relation to grace and works, and more.
The chapter on justification in relation to the work of the Holy Spirit is alone worth the price of the book. Includes a new preface dealing with the New Perspective. If you can only afford to read one book on justification, read this definitive work.” – Joel R. Beeke

The Religious Affections (Jonathan Edwards)
he question driving this book, which Edwards wrote as part of his defense of the awakenings of the 1730s-1740s, is: “What are the distinguishing qualifications of those that are in favor with God, and entitled to his eternal life?”, or, in a shorter form, “What is the nature of true religion?”
A work of lasting value for the help of serious Christians in every generation, this book gives principles by which to assess the validity of a time of revival: is this a work of the Spirit of God?

The Life of Elijah (A. W. Pink)
It is fitting that the lessons which may be drawn from the ministry and life of the prophet Elijah should be studied by each generation: because history repeats itself. The wickedness and idolatry rampant in Ahab’s reign are again thriving in our gross 21st century’s profanities and corruptions.
False prophets occupy large spheres of influence and truths dear to our evangelical forefathers have been downtrodden as the mire in the streets. A.W. Pink clearly felt called to the task of smiting the ungodliness of the age with the rod of God’s anger while at the same time encouraging the faithful remnant. With these objects he undertakes the exposition of Elijah’s ministry and applies it to the contemporary situation.

Layman’s Guide to the Sabbath Question (Dr. Richard Belcher)
Believers today have varying convictions concerning a day of worship and practices related to such a day. But how many understand why they do or do not follow such practices? The authors of A Layman’s Guide to the Sabbath Question seek to aid all believers in coming to a clearer understanding of this Sabbath question.
First, they present three views concerning Sabbath or Lord’s Day observance. Second, they compare these three positions. Finally, suggestions are given the reader to guide him to a personal conclusion in the matter.
All who read this work will not only develop a clearer understanding of their own position, but they will also come to a sharper focus of the other viewpoints and those tenets which distinguish the three.

The Distinguishing Traits of Christian Character (Gardiner Spring)
There are certain marks or character traits on a life that only a true believer in Jesus Christ will possess; likewise, there are traits that men put a great deal of confidence in, but which do not prove a man to be in Christ at all! In this important book, first published in 1813, the author skillfully shows which signs distinguish a true Christian and which do not. These include both internal and external marks.
Jonathan Edwards’ classic work, The Religious Affections, was the inspiration which stirred author Gardiner Spring to write this volume, long awaited to come back into print after a 20+ year absence. Spring’s writing on this subject is a solid survey of the kind of self-examination which all of us would be wise and Biblical to bring to our lives.

Whatever Happened to the Reformation? (Gary Johnson)
Bruce Ware, Darryl Hart, John MacArthur, and others join the editors in calling evangelicals to recover their Reformation roots. Too many evangelicals believe methodology and results trump theology. To reach a postmodern society, they too readily adopt an unbiblical view of God that many Americans find more palatable. Or they subsume Bible study and preaching to secondary status. Whatever Happened to the Reformation? urges us to turn to the theology of the Reformers and allow it to shape every aspect of church and family life. Take it and read!
